Docs & FAQ

Everything you need to get writing.

The full documentation lives inside the app: open Full Documentation from the sidebar at any time. Here are the essentials.

Getting started

  • Start a project. Name it and choose Screenplay, Novel or Game. You can take the guided tour or skip it.
  • Build the board. Columns run left to right; cards stack top to bottom. Double-click any card or column to open its own board underneath.
  • Write the scene. Click the pencil on any card to open the editor for that scene. Full Script shows every scene together.
  • Export. Export Project in the sidebar has every format: PDF, Word, Final Draft, Ink, Articy-style JSON and engine data.

Keyboard shortcuts

EnterIn a card: a new line in the same beat. In the script editor: the next line, in the order a script flows.
Shift+EnterStart a new beat card directly below, carrying on from the cursor.
Tab / Shift+TabCycle a script line forwards or backwards: scene heading, action, character, parenthetical, dialogue, transition.
Enter twiceNovel: a scene break.
Alt+EnterNovel: start a new chapter. Game: turn a beat into a branch, or the Player’s line into a dialogue choice.
Ctrl+EnterLog highlighted text as a character or item.
Ctrl+B / Ctrl+IBold or italic.
Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+YUndo and redo.

Games: branching in brief

  • Branch a beat with Alt+Enter, then give each path a condition from your Variable Bank. The Otherwise path catches everything else.
  • Dialogue choices: mark a character as the Player in the Entities Bank, then press Alt+Enter on their line in the script editor.
  • Effects say what choosing a path changes. Continue to sends a path back to a shared point in the story.
  • Playtest from the start, or from anywhere with any game state, using the buttons at the top of the sidebar.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be online?

No. Pro Writer OS runs entirely offline. The only thing that ever connects is the optional AI loglines, and only if you add your own key.

What happens when the trial ends?

Nothing is lost. Every project stays open to read and export. Activate a licence whenever you’re ready to keep writing.

Can I turn a screenplay project into a novel or a game?

You choose the type when you start a project. What carries over is you: the boards, the shortcuts and the method are the same in all three, so a new version in another medium starts from everything you already know.

Is there a Mac version?

Not at the moment. Pro Writer OS runs on Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit).

Can I bring in my existing work?

Yes. Import a Final Draft script, a Word manuscript, or an Ink or Articy project, and keep going from where you left off.

How do I activate my licence?

Open License in the app and click Activate online, or go to prowriteros.com/activate. Enter the licence code from your purchase email and your Hardware ID, then paste the key you’re given into the License screen.

I’ve got a new computer

Email billy@scriptmaster.co.uk with your licence code. We’ll free it up, and you can activate it on the new computer.

How do backups work?

Pro Writer OS saves as you go and makes timed backups of each project, at an interval you choose. Use Save Now for an immediate snapshot, and Save As to branch off a copy.

What do the AI loglines send, and where?

Nothing, unless you switch them on. By default every logline is created offline on your computer. If you add your own API key, the scene text for a logline is sent to the provider you chose.

Still stuck?

Email billy@scriptmaster.co.uk. If it’s a licence question, include your Hardware ID.
